“Marie-Claire Krell tells stories in three-dimensional space. Papier-mâché figures and videos sketch enigmatic situations, condensed figures leave room for associations. Contrasts sharpen the observer’s perception. Fire and water, armed and unarmed figures are placed on opposite sides. The observer is confronted with an idyll that is only apparently so. Krell challenges the observer to ask questions, to spin on her stories. Now, the idyll is threatening the observer. What is Hansel and Gretel’s father doing with that axe? Where is Gretel? And why is Hansel got a pistol in his hand? Krell pulls the observer into the action, any safe distance for them is lost: in the here and now, observers find themselves rained on by a papier-mâché cloud. In that very moment, the three-dimensional image becomes reality, the observer part of the three-dimensional image.”
